When speaking of change management, several different forms and environments could be included. However, the most commonly used form is in reference to change management of the organizational form. When change management is performed under this environment it is generally the act of creating a plan to make an organization change. The change is usually made to prevent failure and create a plan that works to the benefit of every person involved.

There are two types of change management these are referred to as reactive and proactive. Reactive change is the management of change of the external sort. Proactive change is the management of change internally. Change management is such a broad spectrum because it can implement a variety of environments. For example, they can be performed on a needed basis, regular schedule, or even on a continual basis.

It further branches out into different mediums and angles such as process management, strategic management, and information technology management. Generally change management occurs when a company wishes to overcome change resistance, new technologies, or even new procedures. Typically, the Human Resource department of a business or company conducts change management.

Change management is much needed in the corporate word today because people generally do not accept changes well under any circumstances. The human race is one that demands consistency, therefore, some people may find coping with changes difficult and unwelcoming. Therefore, when undertaking change management the company will generally have to go through some specific stages, in a quick fashion.

These stages include:

• Talking with individuals about the change and why it is needed
• Building a desire within these individuals to participate in and support the necessary changes
• Develop knowledge within others of how to implement the change
• Give them the ability to make use of new behaviors and skills
• Make sure others have the needed reinforcements to accept and perform the change

 

Change management requires that all people within the upper levels of the company to play a large role in sustaining the change. It is important that management gives an accurate and full description of the process to every person that it involves. They must also give reasoning behind the changes and make sure that this information is provided in a timely, reliable, transparent, and complete manner.

Change management also requires higher ups to design the plan in accordance with the feelings of others, as well as providing support to those who must undergo the change at all costs.

Overall, change management, while often necessary for businesses and companies, must be conducted with the utmost care and planning. You cannot hope to conduct the proper change without the needed steps, resources, and strategies. To implement change management, you must include all people in the process that the change will directly affect and help them deal with the changes as necessary. Otherwise, you may find that it backfires and presents a lot of angry, upset, and uninformed people on your hands, which no company wants.
